The painting likely depicts a mother in bed with her newborn child, swaddled to the left-facing, rather than Sheila's own mother, who would have been very unlikely to have allowed Sheila to have captured her so.
Inscribed "Sheila Fell, Mother in Bed" verso, further dated either 1951 or more likely 1953 (somewhat indistinct).
Most likely one of the paintings Fell submitted for her unsuccessful application to the Royal College of Art in 1953 (a painting titled Mother and Child is on the submission list).
